Market Commentary - Pre Session
Indian markets are expected to start the day on positive note today as trends on SGX Nifty indicate a firm opening for the index in India with a 91 points gain.
That apart, in what could be another booster to market sentiment, rating agency ICRA said economic activity recorded a broad-based improvement in December as against November, showing a return of demand. Icra said most of the indicators have displayed a year-on-year expansion in December 2020, which signals a "tentative return to pre-Covid normalcy".
On the result front, ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company, Alembic Pharmaceuticals, Ceat, CSB Bank, DCM Shriram, L&T Infotech, Skipper, Tata Communications, Tata Metaliks, Tata Steel Bsl, Gateway Distriparks, Hatsun Agro Product, HT Media, JSW Ispat Special Products, Bank of Maharashtra, Mold-Tek Packaging, Network18 Media & Investments, Roselabs Finance, TV18 Broadcast, Vardhman Special Steels, Raghav Productivity Enhancers, Shree Ganesh Biotech, Wardwizard Innovations & Mobility, Add-Shop ERetail, AVI Polymers and Bigbloc Construction will announce their quarterly earnings today.
On Monday, the 30-share benchmark index ended at 48564.27 down by -470.4 points or by -0.96 % and then NSE Nifty was at 14281.3 down by -152.4 points or by -1.06 %.
On the global front, stocks in Asian markets and US futures traded higher on Tuesday morning as investors awaited comments from Joe Biden's Treasury Secretary nominee Janet Yellen on US stimulus and the dollar.
Japan’s Topix index added 0.4 per cent, South Korea’s Kospi index rose 0.5 per cent and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 index climbed 1 per cent. The futures on the S&P 500 Index rose 0.4 per cent while the US markets remained shut for trading on Monday on account of a public holiday.

On NSE, total number of shares traded was 34.44 Crore and total turnover stood at Rs. 72758.39 Crore.
On NSE Future and Options, total number of contracts traded in index futures was 423975 with a total turnover of Rs. 39176.97 Crore. Along with this total number of contracts traded in stock futures were 911614 with a total turnover of Rs. 76355.92 Crore. Total numbers of contracts for index options were 26616542 with a total turnover of Rs. 2454719.81 Crore. and total numbers of contracts for stock options were 2169729 with a total turnover of Rs. 187404.13 Crore.
The FIIs on 18/01/2021 stood as net buyer in equity and debt. Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 5247.32 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 864.05 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 6300.18 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 1265.77 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. -1052.86 Crore and Rs. -401.72
